Residence Permit

In Greece, there are several types of residence permits available for different purposes. Let’s explore them

Residence permits for employment and professional reasons

A work permit issued by the Greek government allows independent workers, seasonal workers, corporate executives, athletes, entertainers, digital nomads, highly skilled professionals and instructors, among others, to work in Greece for specific periods of time. These permits are granted on an individual basis and depend on the nationality and status of the applicant.

Residence Permit by Investment

The Greece Golden Visa Program offers a pathway for non-EU nationals and their families to obtain permanent residence permits in Greece. It offers a five year renewable residence permit after an investment in property

Residence permits for family reunification

A third-country national who has been legally residing in Greece for a period of two (2) years is entitled to request the entry and residence in the country of his/her family members. The application is submitted and examined when these members reside outside the Greek territory. Any stay of these members in the Greek territory, prior to the submission of the application for family reunification, is not a reason that prevents the submission of the application.

Family members of citizens of EU, UK, Switzerland, or European Economic Area (EEA), are eligible to receive residence permit.

Residence permits for Greek citizen’s family members

The Greek Immigration Code allows for granting residence permits to family members of Greek citizens who are third-country nationals. To be eligible, you must be staying lawfully in Greece. This means you should have entered either with a Schengen VISA or hold a permanent or temporary residence permit (such as a uniform residence permit, a residence permit issued by another EU Member State, a special legal residence permit, or a certificate of recognized beneficiary of international protection).

Resident Permits for study, voluntary work, research and professional training

Non-European citizen (third country citizen) students should hold a student visa issued by the Greek Embassy of origin country (Visa D) before entering Greece and then obtain a student residence permit before the Visa expires. The expedited student residence permit is submitted by the relevant Institution to the competent Immigration service. Residence permit can also be granted to researchers that are hosted by research organizations after a hosting agreement.

The entry and residence of third-country nationals in Greece for the purpose of professional training or voluntary service is also permitted, provided that specific conditions are cumulatively met in each case.

Resident Permits for humanitarian, exceptional and other reasons

If you have been granted refugee status by the Hellenic Republic or if you are a beneficiary of subsidiary protection, you can obtain a residence permit. A residence permit for exceptional reasons can be granted to persons currently residing without any legal documents in Greece but can prove their residence in Greece for 7 consecutive years before applying with documents of a specific date.

Resident Permits for victims of human trafficking and illegal movement of migrants

Resident permit can be provided to third-country nationals who have been identified as victims of human trafficking or migrant smuggling in specific cases, in order to escape from the influence of the perpetrators of the crimes against them and to be mentally rehabilitated so that they can make a consciously unaffected decision regarding their cooperation with the prosecuting authorities.

Long term residence permit

Third-country nationals residing in Greece, legally and continuously for five (5) years, prior to the date of submission of a relevant application, long-term resident status may be granted if the specific conditions are met.

Applicants are eligible to apply after 7 years of permanent and legal residence in Greece or after 3 years for individuals of Greek origin or those married to a Greek citizen, provided special circumstances are met.

Greek Dual Citizenship

Greece allows its nationals to have dual citizenship. If you’re considering obtaining Greek dual citizenship, here are some key points to keep in mind:

  • Dual citizens can enjoy all the rights and privileges of both Greek and foreign citizenship.
  • Dual citizens are also subject to the responsibilities, duties, and obligations of both citizenships.
  • Greek citizenship offers freedom to travel without restrictions within the European Union, along with the ability to live and work in any EU member state.
  • Regarding the investment sector, Greek citizens have more opportunities than non-Europeans because they can access markets and resources in both Greece and their other country of citizenship, opening the door to a variety of investment options and potential economic benefits.

Remember that specific details and eligibility criteria may vary, so it’s essential to consult official sources or legal experts for accurate and up-to-date information and navigate the process effectively with legal assistance.
